Dr. McEwen attended Duke University as an undergraduate and graduated from Tulane University School of Medicine. He completed his psychiatric residency at the University of North Carolina in 1986. Over the years, he has worked in both the private and public sectors, with a special interest in treating mood disorders, substance use disorders, and ADHD.

Dr. McEwen is a strong believer in the biopsychosocial model of understanding human health and illness. He recognizes the importance of respecting the complexity of human problems and the need to assess biological, psychological, social, and developmental factors when developing a treatment plan.

He has long held a keen interest in the interplay between biological and psychological psychiatry—an interest now being rewarded by innovations in the field, such as ketamine-assisted psychotherapy.

Dr. McEwen is board certified in both General Psychiatry and Addiction Medicine.
